X-Tream: a novel dosimetry system for Synchrotron Microbeam Radiation Therapy

Abstract: Microbeam Radiation Therapy (MRT) is a radiation treatment technique under development for inoperable brain tumors. MRT is based on the use of a synchrotron generated X-ray beam with an extremely high dose rate (∼ 20 kGy/sec), striated into an array of X-ray micro-blades. In order to advance to clinical trials, a real-time dosimeter with excellent spatial resolution must be developed for absolute dosimetry. The design of a real-time dosimeter for such a radiation scenario represents a significant challenge due… Show more

“…The “drop‐in” technology is compatible with standard flexible printed circuit manufacturing technologies and avoids the use of high atomic number materials for packaging of semiconductor radiation detectors, minimizing the perturbation of the beam. The kapton pigtail outside of the diode is shielded by a thin aluminum foil and grounded to minimize radiofrequency interference . Further details on the “drop‐in” packaging technology can be found elsewhere …”

“…Dosimetry of broad beams was performed using a pinpoint chamber TW31014 with a sensitive volume of 0.015 cm 3 . The dose measurements are corrected for ion recombination effects applying a so called "ramping-method."…”

“…In recent years, silicon detectors have become very accurate, though, showing a high resolution, linearity over a wide dose range and allow a microsecond real-time readout. 3,4 However, solid state detectors are usually not water equivalent and may induce distortions in the radiation field. Other more tissue equivalent detectors are MRI gel dosimeters (e.g., PRESAGE™).…”

“…26 Similarly, researchers have used a plastic scintillator based fiber-optic dosimeter for translational movement with a stepper motor and drive screw as a device to acquire the 1D lateral dose profile of a 10 × 10 cm electron beam at a resolution of 3.9 mm. 27 However, for microbeam measurements in which the overall lateral beam dimension is less than 1 mm, a smaller optical fiber based point detector is required to achieve the necessary spatial resolution.…”
