Yasmine : A new tool for stationXML

METEOR is an online tool dedicated to the generation of instrumental responses for seismological stations. This tool builds the complete response of the acquisition chain, while keeping the number of fields to be filled in very reduced. METEOR queries a very rich response databank, designed for the management of the French broadband seismological network (RESIF) and for many research projects involving velocimetric and accelerometric sensors over the last 20 yr. This tool is not intended to allow the management of metadata of an entire network, but to quickly build the instrumental responses of temporary stations. Information about the measuring instruments and their settings can be entered directly in the field, or later, back in the office. Instrument responses can be produced in the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks Station Extended Markup Language format (FDSN StationXML) and the metadata-only form of the Standard for Exchange of Earthquake Data (dataless SEED). The Italian Node of the European Integrated Data Archive

The Orfeus European Integrated Data Archive (EIDA) provides a federated approach to the dissemination of seismological waveform data and ensures access to 12 regional seismological data centers—the EIDA nodes. The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) is one of the founding partners of this EIDA federation and manages the EIDA data distribution node in Italy. INGV has actively managed the smaller MedNet archive since 1990 and adopted a more comprehensive and systematic approach to seismological data archiving since 2007. The Italian EIDA node data archive currently totals 90 TBytes of waveform data available for download, originating from 25 networks and 974 stations, provided by INGV, MedNet, or contributed by various partner institutions. Geographically, it covers mainly Italy and some stations from the Mediterranean region. The archive is currently growing at a rate of approximately 11 TB/yr. INGV recently strengthened its data management capabilities, resources, and infrastructure to effectively respond to the growing scale of station inventory, archive, and volumes of delivered data, and to acknowledge increasing attention toward open data sharing, appropriate attribution, and FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse), as well as higher demands on data quality and expectations of the scientific user community. To this end, it established a dedicated internal unit in charge of all relevant activities related to the Italian EIDA node. In this article, we address key aspects of the EIDA node in Italy such as evolution and status of the seismological waveform archive, and we describe the technical, organizational, and operational setup of data and service management. We also outline ongoing activities and future evolutions aiming to further increase the quality of services, data availability, data and metadata quality, resilience, and sustainability.

GEOSCOPE Network: 40 Yr of Global Broadband Seismic Data

The GEOSCOPE observatory (Institut de physique du globe de Paris [IPGP] and École et Observatoire des Sciences de la Terre de Strasbourg, 1982) provides more than four decades of high-quality continuous broadband data to the scientific community. Started in 1982 with only two stations, the network has grown over the years thanks to numerous international partnerships. At present, 34 stations operate in 18 countries across all continents and on islands throughout the oceans, filling important gaps in global Earth coverage. Most of the first installed stations are still running today, allowing for long-term observations, and new sites are being prospected to further improve global coverage. Over the years, GEOSCOPE has contributed to defining today’s global seismology standards (data format, data quality level, instrumentation requirements), being the French contribution to the international effort for global seismic observations. The stations are instrumented with the best quality seismometers (from the very first STS-1 in the early 80s to the last STS-6A and Trillium T360 today) and digitizers (Q330HR and Centaur) to record with high fidelity the ground motions generated by all types of seismic sources. Real-time data are sent to the tsunami warning centers and both validated and real-time data are available at the IPGP, Epos-France and Earthscope data centers. The quality of GEOSCOPE data and metadata is ensured by daily and yearly validation that enables issue detection and mitigation. GEOSCOPE, in collaboration with the other global networks, has played and continues to play a crucial role in the study of Earth’s structure and global dynamics and the characterization of all types of seismic sources.
