YBCO melt-textured growth seeded by superheating YBCO/MgO thin film

Abstract: Using YBCO/MgO thin films, for the first time, we report a success in the melt-textured growth of YBCO bulks by the cold-seeding method. The grown bulk has a good orientation relation of YBCO 100 bulk YBCO 100 film MgO 100 substrate . In this process, the YBCO film withstood heating over its peritectic temperature (up to 1045 • C) for 1.5 h and acted as a seed for the YBCO bulk growth, indicating an intrinsic superheating property, which was reported in other work. The unique superheating mechanism in this stu… Show more

“…The temperature range for the single domain growth, and further restrain the self‐nucleation can be broadened by raising T max . In the previous work, YBCO bulk grown using a YBCO thin film with a superheating effect as a seed has been reported 17 . Because of the similar structures among the REBCO compound family, the use of a superheating film as a seed can be extended for other REBCO systems.…”

“…In previous reports, YBCO/MgO thin films with high thermal stability 4 have been demonstrated to act successfully as seeds for the growth of bulk YBCO. 12 The many desirable properties of YBCO thin films such as superheating, the induction of homo-epitaxial growth and their ability to be cleaved with a precise orientation makes them potentially suitable to overcome the major limitations of the multi-seeding process.…”
