Yerba Mate Modulates Tumor Cells Functions Involved in Metastasis in Breast Cancer Models

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent cancer in women and tumor metastasis is a major cause of cancer-related deaths. Our aim was to evaluate anti-metastatic properties of yerba mate extract (YMe) in BC models. 4T1, F3II, MCF-7, and MDA-MB231 cell lines were used to perform in vitro assays. The F3II syngeneic mammary carcinoma model in BALB/c mice was used to evaluate tumor progression, BC metastasis and survival. Cells were inoculated subcutaneously into the flank for the heterotopic model and into the mamm… Show more

“…The characteristic taste of the infusion comes from saponins, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Xanthines are also an inseparable component of the leaves [4]. Processing Yerba Mate involves drying the leaves at very high temperatures (400-750 degrees Celsius) or exposing them to fire.…”

“…A su vez, provocó un retraso en la aparición de los tumores respecto a los animales de los grupos controles y el volumen de los mismos fue considerablemente menor. En todos los modelos ensayados registraron que el tratamiento con el vegetal logró un aumento en la sobrevida de los animales (García-Lázaro et al, 2020) (Rocio Soledad et al, 2021.…”

“…Many studies confirm also the important role of Yerba Mate in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases [ 6 , 10 ]. Yerba Mate may also have anti-mutagenic, anti-proliferative, cytotoxic, and anti-cancer effects in relation to various cancers [ 9 , 11 , 12 ]. The beneficial effect of Yerba Mate in the course of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases is also known [ 13 ].…”
