Yield and Irrigation Water Productivity of Three Varieties of Buffel Grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) in the Southern Coastal Plains of Yemen

Abstract: Small stakeholder farmers in southern coastal plains of Yemen as in other Arabian Peninsula countries are fanciers and suffering from shortage of forages mainly during winter season. This study was carried out during three years (2012)(2013)(2014) at farmers' fields in the southern coastal plain in Bir Jabir, Lahej in Yemen on loamy-sand soil, to determine the best irrigation water productivity of two exotic and one indigenous (local) accessions of buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris L.), cultivated at two farmer … Show more

“…Many studies conclude that, in most arid rangelands, there are a few key grazing species that have significant potential to withstand heavy grazing. Our findings corroborate with [48], where similar species such as C. ciliaris and C. dactylon were most dominant near penning tents and piospheres. Further, these species are found to be extremely tolerant to fire and are adaptable to various edaphic and climatic conditions.…”

“…However, irrigation research aimed mainly on crop productivity has been the focus of several authors, such as the Atroosh et al (2018) However, it is necessary to know the uniformity of water distribution provided by the equipment used in the irrigation to obtain a more uniform productivity of the crop. …”

“…Many studies in arid rangelands depict lower vegetation cover and density near to grazers households, camping sites and water sources [55]. It is mainly due to increased dependence upon grazing resources present near the grazers households [56].…”
