Yield parameters, antioxidant activity, polyphenol and total soluble solids content of beetroot cultivars with different flesh colours

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate yield parameters, antioxidant activity (AOA), total polyphenol content (TPC) and total soluble solids (TSS) in beetroot cultivars with different flesh colours. Field experiments were established at the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra in 2016 and 2017. Within the study, 16 beetroot cultivars were tested, including 11 red-fleshed (‘Boltardy’, ‘Boro’ F1, ‘Crosby Egyptian’, ‘Cylindra’, ‘Detroit Globe’, ‘Detroit 2’, ‘Egyptian Turnip Rooted’, ‘Opolski’, ‘Pablo’ F1, ‘Renova’ and… Show more

“…Apples are rich in sucrose and fructose [36] , and beetroot is known as a source of sucrose [40] . Generally, the values of pH and total soluble solids are similar to those previously reported in the literature for the three products [41] , [42] , [43] , [44] , [45] , [46] . Among the solvents, distilled water and citric acid presented the lowest viscosity and densities.…”

“…During the growing, it is recommended to fertilize the beets through the leaves; additionally, no additional fertilization was used in our study. The results obtained by researchers confirmed the statistically significant effect of the cultivar on the yield of beetroots [39]. The beetroots yield can be affected by the different growing systems, irrigation and soil salinity, fertilization strategy, or meteorological conditions during the vegetation period [39].…”

“…The results obtained by researchers confirmed the statistically significant effect of the cultivar on the yield of beetroots [39]. The beetroots yield can be affected by the different growing systems, irrigation and soil salinity, fertilization strategy, or meteorological conditions during the vegetation period [39]. The yield of beetroot may vary from 19.86-25.70 [40] or 20.74-41.91 [39] to 54.80-69.43 t ha −1 [24].…”

“…The 'Kosak' flesh had the highest amounts of this component (9.90 • Brix) among genotypes. According to the literature, the amounts of dry matter and TSS for the whole beetroot varied widely from 11.0-18.1% [28] and from 6.40-10.8 • Brix [29], respectively. The amounts of fiber, protein, ash, and total sugars can be affected by various factors.…”
