Your Brain on Art: Emergent Cortical Dynamics During Aesthetic Experiences

Abstract: The brain response to conceptual art was studied with mobile electroencephalography (EEG) to examine the neural basis of aesthetic experiences. In contrast to most studies of perceptual phenomena, participants were moving and thinking freely as they viewed the exhibit The Boundary of Life is Quietly Crossed by Dario Robleto at the Menil Collection-Houston. The brain activity of over 400 subjects was recorded using dry-electrode and one reference gel-based EEG systems over a period of 3 months. Here, we report … Show more

“…This is not necessarily a shortcoming if the research question involves testing for relative differences, but it does become an issue if the presence versus absence of a process must be inferred . Indeed, researchers have recently relied on increasingly fine‐tuned analytic techniques for making inferences about mental processes . With this in mind, we are ready to begin our journey through the extant literature.…”

“…How best to sample neurophysiological data over time and "in the field" is a question that will need to be resolved over time (Gramann, Ferris, Gwin, & Makeig, 2014). Mobile EEG has begun to be used in museum studies and innovative approaches to data collection have begun to emerge (Kontson et al, 2015;Tröndle & Tschacher, 2012). Technological issues of sampling and separating signal from noise and theoretical issues of how best to use such technology in a hypothesistesting framework remain, but these methods have great promise.…”
