Zebrafish and Medaka: new model organisms for modern biomedical research

Abstract: Although they are primitive vertebrates, zebrafish (Danio rerio) and medaka (Oryzias latipes) have surpassed other animals as the most used model organisms based on their many advantages. Studies on gene expression patterns, regulatory cis-elements identification, and gene functions can be facilitated by using zebrafish embryos via a number of techniques, including transgenesis, in vivo transient assay, overexpression by injection of mRNAs, knockdown by injection of morpholino oligonucleotides, knockout and ge… Show more

“…Given its many advantages, zebrafish is now a recognized model for toxicological and biomedical assays [74][75][76][77]. The main advantages of this species are rapid development, external fertilization, easy observation of all developmental stages, small size, transparency of the embryos and larvae, large number of embryos, ease of maintenance and close contact with surrounding medium (water) allowing easy interface with materials.…”

“…Spawns are generally large (average 100 embryos) and embryos can be raised to (sexual) maturity within 2–3 months, which is less labor-intensive and cheaper than for other commonly used laboratory animals. Also, routine techniques used in genetic research, including knock-in, knockdown, and knockout, are well-established in zebrafish (Lin, Chiang, & Tsai, 2016). Hence, zebrafish are particularly suitable vertebrates for high-frequency mutagenesis and large-scale genetic screening studies.…”
