Zeolite-based biomaterials for biomedical application: A review

Abstract: Abstract. This review focuses on the latest reports of the use of zeolites, natural as well as synthetic, as biomedical materials. Discussion on biocompatibility, non-toxicity, zeolite for drug delivery materials, zeolite for bone implants and implant coatings, and the mechanical properties of polymer-zeolite composites are included. The section on the interaction between body tissues and zeolite-based biomaterials focuses on their biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and bioactivity. The next section concerns drug… Show more

“…Indeed, asperities of the harder surface (stainless-steel) plow on the asperities of the softer surface (polymer) resulting HDPE abrasive debris. 6,15 Similar results were illustrated by Cooper et al, 35 where abrasive wear in the polymer was related to macroscopic or microscopic asperity contact between the sliding surfaces.…”

“…13 Thus, HDPE implants reveal a lack of some inflammatory reaction that causes HDPE debris. 14,15 Improving the wear resistance of the polymer has been one of the main objectives of tribology research. To achieve this later, finding a new biomaterial with high tribological performances has been a challenge for decades.…”

“…Their work confirms previous studies that zeolites are suitable as substrates for combining metal ions [69,70], and implant coatings material [71,69]. The use of zeolite for biomedical applications has been outlined in a topical review [72]. The HA-zeolite composite was also developed as a coating material in stainless steel and titanium alloys [73].…”

“…Examples of these applications include haemostatics [7], carriers for drug delivery [8,9], substrates for protein immobilization [10], substrates for incorporating metallic ions with antibacterial properties [11], and, particularly, bone implant coatings [12]. Various applications of zeolites, including applications with biomedical perspectives, have been summarized in recent reviews [13,14].…”
