Zeolitic imidazolate framework composite membranes and thin films: synthesis and applications

Abstract: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a subclass of metal organic frameworks, are built of tetrahedral metal ions bridged by imidazolates. They have permanent porosity and relatively high thermal and chemical stability, which make them attractive candidates for many industrial applications. In recent years, significant progress has been made in developing ZIFs into membranes and thin films for gas separation, liquid separation (pervaporation) and functional devices. Various techniques, such as direct synthes… Show more

“…In addition, robust hydrothermal and chemical stability of ZIF-8 structure further endows its promising application in gas separation (Low et al, 2009;Pan et al, 2011b;Park et al, 2006). Therefore, ZIF-8 membrane with negligible permeance (~10 -10 mol/m 2 s Pa) of propane was expected to fabricate through controlling the heterogeneous nucleation of ZIF-8 crystals on supports as well as promoting the intergrowth of ZIF-8 grains (Yao and Wang, 2014).…”

“…Furthermore, it is frequently exploited as an ion-exchanger, adsorbents, and catalysts [9,10]. The size of zeolite particles may be influenced by crystallization at controlled temperature [11]. Zeolite has potential application in separation membranes due to fine adsorption and diffusion selectivity.…”

“…The chronological evolution of this type of MMM is certainly promising and exciting and shows the attention that this type of material has received from the scientific community. Additionally, the reader is directed to several reviews of MOF-based MMMs [134,206,207,[259][260][261][262][263][264][265] that present the most significant developments and challenges in this field. Adapted with permission from [208].…”
