Zinc‐Catalysed Multi‐Component Reactions: An Overview

Abstract: Multi-component reactions (MCRs) have gathered much attention recently due to their superior efficiency, exceptional selectivity and simplicity. Synthesis of various compounds with maximum efficiency and almost zero by-products are their major highlights. Zinc is an easily accessible, economically feasible and environmentally viable catalyst. This first review in this topic focuses on the developments in zinc-catalysed multicomponent reactions and covers literature up to 2019.

“…Hantzsch dihydropyridine synthesis, [ 6,7 ] Biginelli reaction, [ 8,9 ] Passerini reaction, [ 10,11 ] Kabachnik‐Fields reaction, [ 12,13 ] Ugi reaction, [ 14,15 ] Gröbcke‐Blackburn‐Bienaymé reaction [ 16 ] etc. Transition metal catalysis also made its way into multicomponent reactions and different transition metals like Pd, [ 17 ] Cu, [ 18,19 ] Rh, [ 20 ] Au, [ 21 ] Ag, [ 22 ] Zn, [ 23 ] Fe [ 24,25 ] etc. have shown its applicability in MCRs.…”

“…Lewis acids have been known as one of the best options regarding catalytic MCRs. [ 86–88 ] Their selection provides relative stability, ease of handling, low cost and high yields. The importance of Lewis acids as catalysts in synthetic organic chemistry originates from the fact that they are capable of coordinating with carbonyl groups and other oxygen atoms, nitrogen containing functional groups, while being used in catalytic amounts.…”

“…Multicomponent reactions reflect also the state of the art in chemical control since generally C-C and C-X (X = heteroatom) bonds are formed in one single step. For recent interesting applications of mechanochemistry in multicomponent reactions see references [ 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 , 85 , 86 , 87 ].…”
