Combining high‐spatial resolution geochronology and geochemistry of zircon provides constraints on the geodynamic evolution of the Zagros orogen. This study underlines the significance of hitherto unknown magmatic/geological events in the central Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc (UDMA) of Iran at ca. 35–22 and 10 Ma. Recently reported U–Pb zircon ages of 25–24 Ma for the granodioritic rocks from the south Ardestan area were interpreted to constrain the crystallization age. Newly determined U–Pb zircon ages of ca. 35 to 22 Ma from south Ardestan gabbroic to granitic rocks and related dikes indicate that the melt evolution continued from the Oligocene into Early Miocene time. In addition, a ca. 10 Ma U–Pb age for the zircons from a south Ardestan diorite provides evidence for a so far unknown, igneous episode. Representing the youngest magmatic stage recognized in the central part of the UDMA, the 10 Ma age is interpreted to document magmatic activity related to the Arabia–Eurasia collision, as recognized elsewhere in the Zagros orogen. South Ardestan zircons with geochemical signatures indicating continental affinity likely recrystallized in the course of a major event (asthenospheric mantle melt formation) that has affected crustal rocks. The significant lower LREEs of these zircons compared to hydrothermal zircons, moderate Th/U (>0.4), and high (Sm/La)N (>10) ratios associated with low [La] (<1 ppm) suggest that these crystals have an igneous origin and are not related to hydrothermal or metamorphic processes. These findings bear important implications for the geodynamic evolution of the Zagros orogen and support a model suggesting that magmatic activity still affected the UDMA in Late Miocene time.

This paper presents UPb zircon dating and element compositions for Miocene intrusive rocks in NE Tafresh situated in the central Urumieh‐Dokhtar Magmatic Arc. These intrusive rocks, consisting of granodiorite and diorite, were emplaced during the Early Miocene (19.07–20.37 Ma), following extensive submarine volcanic activity in the Eocene. In normalized multi‐element diagrams, all the analysed rocks are characterized by enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Ba, Rb, and Sr) and depletions in high field strength elements (e.g., Nb, Ta, and Hf) and display geochemical features typical of subduction‐related calc‐alkaline arc magmas. The enrichment of light rare earth elements and flat heavy rare earth elements patterns reflect amphibole fractionation from relatively hydrous, calc‐alkalic magmas. The geochemical features and ages of the Tafresh intrusive rocks suggest that the Neo‐Tethys Ocean did not close completely in the region until the Miocene and is consistent with a diachronous collision starting in the NW and closing later in the SE.

The Zagros Orogen formed during the Cenozoic collision of Arabia with Eurasia and resulted in the closure of the Neo‐Tethys Ocean. Collision was preceded by a complicated tectonic history involving Pan‐African orogenesis, Late Palaeozoic rifting and the formation of Neo‐Tethys, and subsequent Mesozoic convergence on the northern margin of the ocean contemporaneous with ophiolite obduction on its southern margin. The Sanandaj–Sirjan Zone (SaSZ) is a metamorphic belt within the Zagros Orogen of Gondwanan provenance. U–Pb zircon geochronology has revealed the presence of Pan‐African igneous and metamorphic basement complexes, in addition to minor late Palaeozoic plutons and abundant Jurassic plutonic rocks. This study presents a LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb apatite age of 440.7 ± 3.7 Ma from a gabbroic body on the central north‐eastern margin of the SaSZ (Nodoushan region). Based on petrography and geochemistry, en route fractional crystallization of ascending magma was an important process in the evolution of the intrusive rocks. Geochemical characteristics imply that the south‐west Nodoushan alkaline gabbroic magma was originated from the asthenospheric mantle source, whereas the high ratios of (La/Yb)N and (Dy/Yb)N are related to the low degree of partial melting from the garnet‐bearing mantle source. Enrichment pattern of Nb, Ta, and Ti and depletion of Rb, Th, and Y are similar to the OIB pattern and intraplate alkaline magmatic rocks. High εNd(t) values (+1.29 to +1.50), low initial Sr isotopic ratios (0.703679–0.704098), and trace element ratios (e.g., Nb/La, Ce/Pb, Ba/Nb, and Th/Nb) indicate that crustal contamination was insignificant in its petrogenesis. The petrogenesis of the Nodoushan alkaline gabbroic rocks could be related to the presence of extensional phase, upwelling and decompressional melting of asthenospheric mantle in the rift basin which was associated with the opening of the Paleo‐Tethys Ocean in Late Ordovician to Silurian times.
