Zirconia ceramic fixed partial dentures after cyclic fatigue tests and clinical evaluation: a systematic review

Abstract: Zirconia fixed prosthetic dentures are extensively used for replacing missing teeth. The primary objective of this systematic review was to gather and present the results of all in vitro studies and clinical trials conducted on zirconia fixed prosthetic dentures. This review concentrated exclusively on bilayered zirconia and monolithic fixed prosthetic dentures. As such this paper can act as a guideline for more comparable future experimental work on zirconia ceramics. Future studies must use a more systematic… Show more

“…Additionally, possible adverse reactions of metal alloys on tissues have accelerated the development of a metal -free ceramic dental restorations. The development of framework ceramics for fixed prosthodontics represents the transition toward polycrystalline ceramic materials (1) Yttria is added to control the crystal structure transformation during firing at an elevated temperature and enhance the physical properties of zirconia (2 ,3) Although zirconia is now accepted as the gold standard in the field of fixed prosthodontics due to its superior biocompatibility, chemical stability, flexural strength and fracture toughness, its limited capacity to undergo plastic deformation results in fracture at the first sign of increased loading.…”

“…In recent years, zirconia ceramic materials have been applied from traditional dentistry to aerospace, parts manufacturing, artificial bones and other fields due to their advantages of high melting point, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and good biocompatibility [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]. At present, scholars have a strong interest in various physical and chemical studies of zirconia, and most of the research on this material focuses on its processing and structural characteristics Journal of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering [6] [7] [8] [9] [10].…”

“…The unique material with high mechanical properties, 3 mol% Y 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 ceramic (Y-TZP) has been intensively studied in the past [1][2][3]. The interest in the mechanical properties of Y-TZP has been high for a long time, as this ceramic shows very high strength and sufficiently high fracture toughness, which allow it to be used in ceramic knives, dental and other biomedical implants, bearing, and wear applications among others [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Y-TZP has also caused a lot of fundamental interest due to the occurrence of stress-induced martensitic tetragonal to monoclinic phase transformation [1].…”
