Zone-Based Cooperative Content Caching and Delivery for Radio Access Network With Mobile Edge Computing

Abstract: Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising solution to meet the latency requirement for delay-sensitive services in a 5G radio access network (RAN). Its key idea is to deploy computing and storage capacities at the edge of the RAN to quickly provision content and processing capacities as required by the users. Efficient content caching and delivery are key issues to ensure the success of this technique. This paper proposes a zone-based cooperative content caching and delivery scheme for a RAN supporting MEC (M… Show more

“…Dynamic heuristic algorithms were proposed to make decisions on computation offloading [20], [22], [23]. In [24] a heuristic collaborative content caching strategy was developed to determine the content items to be cached on each MEC server. The region-based scheme performed better than the average content delivery and other intermediate computing strategies balanced the offloading when comparing the delay of MEC servers.…”

“…where Size df is the content size, v tr is the content transmission rate, R is the maximal coverage radius of the serving BS or core network, d is the distance between the user and the serving BS or between the serving BS and the core network, and D * is the maximal propagation latency between the user and the serving BS or between the serving BS and the core network. To meet the requirement of the fifthgeneration (5G) communication [22], the indicator D * is expressed as follows:…”

“…These aforementioned works studied the data sponsor schemes from the perspective of optimizing traditional cellular networks, but did not cover the data sponsoring in edge caching schemes. Recent studies [7], [8], [10], [11], [24], [25] have shown the importance of edge caching, especially in mitigating the delivery pressure of CDNs, and optimizing the delivery cost in high-speed cellular networks, e.g., 4G/5G. In an edge caching scheme, edge nodes with large storage/bandwidth capacities are connected by low-rate backhaul links.…”

“…al. analyzed the effectiveness of edge caching at base stations and users' devices in 4G/5G networks, especially in reducing the backhaul traffic congestion [10]. Several recent works have implemented the prototypes of edge caching at different edge locations, such as, base stations [11], [24], [26], femtocell [9], small cell [25], [27], and Wi-Fi access points [28]. None of the edge cache related works consider achieving data sponsoring via edge cache network.…”
