Zucchini yellow mosaic virus

Abstract: Zucchini yellow mosaic potyvirus (ZYMV), first isolated in Italy in 1973, described in 1981, and then identified in all continents within a decade, is one of the most economically important viruses of cucurbit crops. It is efficiently aphid-transmitted in a nonpersistent manner and it is also seed-borne in zucchini squash, which could have contributed to its rapid spread worldwide. Biological variability has been observed among ZYMV isolates, concerning host range, symptomatology and aphid transmissibility. Mo… Show more

“…WMV and ZYMV have overlapping host ranges ( primarily comprising cucurbits [21,22]), cause similar symptoms [22] and are transmitted (non-persistently) by the same aphid species, although with differing efficiency [23]. Like other potyviruses, WMV and ZYMV have unipartite single-stranded positive sense RNA genomes (similar in size and organization [20,24]) encoding a polyprotein, and both use a helper-component protein for attachment to the aphid stylet [25].…”

“…ZYMV was first detected in summer squash in northern Italy (Lisa et al 1981). Subsequently, the virus spread worldwide, especially infecting squashes and pumpkins and causing significant yield reductions in these crops (Desbiez & Lecoq 1997;Svoboda & Polák 2002). The virus is easily non-persistently transmissible by aphids and at long distances via infected seeds (Fletcher et al 2000).…”
