Zum Interesse an einer Versicherung von Sturmschäden im Schweizer Wald | On the demand for an insurance against storm damage in Swiss forests

Abstract: We investigated the potential demand for insurance against storm damage in Swiss forests, drawing on theories of insurance economics and behavioural economics. Data were collected by the means of a postal survey of forest owners and in expert interviews. The results show that, at present, there is little demand for such insurance. However, under altered legal and economic conditions, insurance could be conducive to the management of damaging storm events.

“…This risk is at the origin of this literature on forest insurance since the seminal papers [45,47,49,50] focus on wildfire insurance in the U.S. and Japan. However, storms are also largely studied, especially in Europe [18,22,33,53], and hurricanes in Honduras [43]. Pine beetles are rarely studied [27].…”

“…Some scholars found that the age and education level of farmers had no significant influence on their willingness to participate in the insurance program [11], while some scholars also found that the willingness of farmers to participate in the insurance program would increase with the decrease of age and the increase of education level [57]. Holthausen and Baurfound [58] that the family income structure had a significant impact on the participation of farmers in the insurance. When the agricultural income was not the main economic source of the family, the farmers were not willing to buy agricultural insurance.…”

“…Total household income has a positive influence on fishery insurance participation. Holthausen and Baur [58] found that household income structure has a significant influence on farmers' participation behavior. The production specialization, measured by the proportion of income from mariculture to the total income has a positive influence on the participation of aquaculture insurance.…”
