Zwitterionic Acetylated Cellulose Nanofibrils

Abstract: A strategy is devised to synthesize zwitterionic acetylated cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). The strategy included acetylation, periodate oxidation, Schiff base reaction, borohydride reduction, and a quaternary ammonium reaction. Acetylation was performed in glacial acetic acid with a short reaction time of 90 min, yielding, on average, mono-acetylated CNF with hydroxyl groups available for further modification. The products from each step were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, ζ-potential, SEM-EDS, AFM, and tit… Show more

“…The acetyl capping of P(B5AMA)-10 post treatment with acetic anhydride was found to be successful by FTIR spectroscopy. cP(B5AMA)-10 showed a characteristic C–O stretch of esters at 1250 cm –1 , bending and stretching of alkanes at 1350 and 2920 cm –1 , respectively, and a CO stretch at 1710 cm –1 . Moreover, the disruption of hydrogen-bonding interaction of the cP(B5AMA)-10 matrix was apparent by the reduced OH group stretching of P(B5AMA)-10 at 3282 cm –1 ; however, the signal intensity of the OH group stretching was stronger than that of dP(B5AMA)-10, suggesting the presence of water molecules in the cP(B5AMA)-10 matrix.…”

“…The band 1051 cm −1 was assigned to cellulose primary alcohol C-OH stretch [36], a region also assigned to polyphenols from the pure yerba mate extract (1040-1050 cm −1 ) [37]. The cellulose band in this region (dashed lines from Figure 1), was the most prominent one in the cellulose spectra that was not shown when the extract was blended after defibrillation of MFC.…”

“…Recently, poly(cysteine methacrylate) was surface-grafted on NC by free-radical polymerization, where the coating of this modified NC on the membrane surface yielded excellent antifouling and antibacterial properties . There are other examples of using zwitterionic materials to modify NC, electrospun nanofibers, and CNC, to improve antifouling properties of varying membranes, such as PDVF, and commercial cellulose membranes . The use of zwitterionic polymers to prevent adsorption of proteins is a well-known strategy to reduce fouling, based on the ability of charge-neutral zwitterionic moieties to attract water, forming a hydration layer that thwarts the proteins adsorption (Figure b). Self-assembled monolayers in Figure c are zwitterionic transplanted from the membrane surface through surface-initiated ATRP reaction by dip coating method or plasmas treatments. , It is known that micro/nanostructured surfaces also can reduce fouling and inactivate bacterial cells by physical means; however, this topic is not included in this review.…”
