Zwitterionic Polymer Brushes Coated with Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles as Efficient Adsorbents for Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract: In this study, a polymer brush derived from poly(2-(tert-butylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-coated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (PTBAEMA–SO3H@MSNPs) was successfully fabricated. The structure and morphology of PTBAEMA–SO3H@MSNPs were studied using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and elemental analysis techniques. The optimal conditions for the removal of rhodamine B (Rh B) and crystal violet (CV) by PTBAEMA–SO3H@MSNPs were determined. The best… Show more

“…19 Among them, nanoparticles have great advantages in dye adsorption because of their small size and large specific surface area. 20,21 After physical or chemical treatment, the surface area and porosity of activated carbon can be increased, thus achieving a higher dye adsorption effect. [22][23][24] Clay and minerals have strong affinity for cations and anions, which is beneficial for the adsorption of dyes.…”

“…Mesoporous materials have garnered significant interest for various applications, such as catalyst support, , adsorbents, , optical materials, and drug-delivery carriers , because of their unique properties, such as high surface areas, large pore volumes, high biocompatibility, and high biodegradability. Hollow mesoporous organosilica (HMOS) nanoparticles are a class of mesoporous materials with organic groups between inorganic silica frameworks in the mesoporous shell and large internal cavities. , When HMOS is used as a drug-delivery carrier, large amounts of drug molecules can be incorporated into its cavity. Therefore, considerable research has focused on various applications of HMOS.…”
