γ-Tocopherol Accelerated Sodium Excretion in a Dose-Dependent Manner in Rats with a High Sodium Intake

Abstract: Summary We have previously reported that γ-tocopherol (γ-Toc) displays a natriuretic potency in rats fed a NaCl diet and administered 20 mg γ-Toc. In this study, we investigated whether γ-Toc has natriuretic potency at a dose lower or higher than 20 mg in rats given a NaCl diet. Male rats were fed a control diet or a NaCl diet and administered either placebo or 10, 20 or 40 mg of γ-Toc. The rat urine was collected for 24 hours (divided into 6 hour periods) and the 2,7,8-trimethyl-2-(2'-carboxyethyl)-6-hydroxyc… Show more

“…An antioxidant effect of α-tocopherol was reported in a murine liver model where rats fed with supplemental vitamin E had higher liver α-tocopherol levels and decreased lipid peroxidation after the introduction of an oxidizing agent 1 . Beyond antioxidant effects, γ-tocopherol increased sodium excretion in a dose-dependent manner in rats fed an NaCl-rich diet 16 , suggesting that dietary γ-tocopherol may prevent vascular dementia associated with hypertension. Furthermore, triple transgenic mice for Alzheimer disease showed lower natural killer cell activity than that of the controls before the onset of Alzheimer disease 17 , whilst dietary supplementation of vitamin E is known to enhance natural killer cell proliferation in older adults 18 .…”
