The Virgo Experiment is a gravitational wave interferometric detector. It consists in a Michelson interferometer with two 3 km long Fabry‐Perot cavities as orthogonal arms. The installation of the detector has been completed in September 2003 and presently the apparatus is under commissioning. In this article an overview of the detector status is presented
The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph currently in manufacturing, assembly and integration phase. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin² sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec² and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The instrument is a large assembly of 24 identical high performance integral field units, each one composed of an advanced image slicer, a spectrograph and a 4kx4k detector. In this paper we review the progress of the manufacturing and report the performance achieved with the first integral field unit.
Reducing thermal noise from optical coatings is crucial to reaching the required sensitivity in next generation interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. Here we show that adding TiO 2 to Ta 2 O 5 in Ta 2 O 5 /SiO 2 coatings reduces the internal friction and in addition present data confirming it reduces thermal noise. We also show that TiO 2 -doped Ta 2 O 5 /SiO 2 coatings are close to satisfying the optical absorption requirements of second generation gravitational-wave detectors.
We report on the status of the Virgo detector, under commissioning. We will focus on the last year's activity. The two commissioning runs performed during 2005 allowed us to reach a sensitivity of h ∼ 6 × 10 −22. The data obtained during the runs were used to test a few data analysis algorithms, namely coalescing binaries and burst searches. The main improvements made on the detector during this year will be described, as well as the plans and activities foreseen in the coming years.
