________________________________________________________________________Over the past few years, researchers have been exploring possibilities for ways in which embedded technologies can enrich children's storytelling experiences. In this article we present our research on physical interactive storytelling environments from a child's perspective. We present the system architecture as well as a formative study of the technology's use with 18 children, ages 5-6. We discuss the challenges and opportunities for kindergarten children to become creators of their own physical storytelling interactions.
How children's technology is developed, and who is involved in the process, can vary greatly. While there are many roles children can play in the design of new technology, at the University of Maryland we have focused on partnering with children ages 7-11. We have found these intergenerational partnerships can lead to unexpected technology innovations, as well as establishing design methods for working with children. Influenced by the cooperative design practices of the Scandinavian countries, and participatory design and contextual inquiry in the U.S., we have developed design methods for working with children called Cooperative Inquiry [3,4].A case study illustrates how even young children can contribute to the technology design process.
In this paper we describe the first version of the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL). As a fiveyear research project, its mission is to enable children to access and read an international collection of children's books through the development of new interface technologies. This paper will describe the need for such research, our work in the context of other digital libraries for children, and an initial analysis of the first seven weeks of the ICDL's public use on the web.
Reading books plays an important role in children's cognitive and social development. However, many children do not have access to diverse collections of books due to the limited resources of their community libraries. We have begun to address this issue by creating a large-scale digital archive of children's books, the International Children's Digital Library (ICDL). In this paper we discuss our initial efforts in building the ICDL, concentrating on an informal evaluation of innovative digital book readers.
