Pim pinella anisum , chamomile, Matricaria rec utit a, c umin, C uminum c yminum , basil, Ocim um basilicum and lupine, Lupinus albus w ere tes ted to det ermine t heir insec ticidal properties against Si tophil us granarius on w heat grains . Considering the percentag e of m ort alit y, t he toxicit y of oils increased graduall y with increasing concentrations. A nise oil had t he low est LC 50 follow ed by clove ˂ b asil ˂ chamomil e ˂ cumin ˂ lupine. Mortalit y r at es of ad ult weevils w as high at the initi al time up to 6 week s post exp osur e to grains pre-tr eated with the t est ed botanical oils at LC 50 Lev el. Ther eafter, the ac tivit y graduall y decr eased over tim e. B ot h LC 50 and LC99 of anis e oil prevented weevils' oviposition on tr eated wheat grains. At b oth LC 50 and LC99 val ues , no ad ults em erged from eggs laid on grai ns pretreat ed wit h cl ove and cham omile. At LC 50, ver y few adults emerged from eggs laid on grains pretreat ed with c umin, lupine and basil in comparison wit h the c ontr ol. In addition, the ef fec ts of t hes e oils on water abs orption and seed g ermination of tr eat ed w heat grai ns stored f or up t o 18 w eeks w as st udied. In gener al, either LC 50 or LC99 values of t es ted oils showed negligible reduction i n wat er swelling c apacit y (W SC) of treat ed wheat seeds at the ini tial tim e or ev e n af ter l ong time of s tor age. T he res ults als o s howed negligible decreas e in g ermination of wheat grains tr eat ed wit h tes ted oils at LC 50 and LC99 l evels ev en 18 w eeks p ost -treatm ent.
