In a 3.5-year long study, the long-term performance of a mobile, solar absorption Bruker EM27/SUN spectrometer, used for greenhouse gas observations, is checked with respect to a co-located reference Bruker IFS 125HR spectrometer, which is part of the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON). We find that the EM27/SUN is stable on timescales of several years; the drift per year between the EM27/SUN and the official TCCON product is 0.02 ppmv for XCO 2 and 0.9 ppbv for XCH 4 , which is within the 1σ precision of the comparison, 0.6 ppmv for XCO 2 and 4.3 ppbv for XCH 4 . The bias between the two data sets is 3.9 ppmv for XCO 2 and 13.0 ppbv for XCH 4 . In order to avoid sensitivity-dependent artifacts, the EM27/SUN is also compared to a truncated IFS 125HR data set derived from full-resolution TCCON interferograms. The drift is 0.02 ppmv for XCO 2 and 0.2 ppbv for XCH 4 per year, with 1σ precisions of 0.4 ppmv for XCO 2 and 1.4 ppbv for XCH 4 , respectively. The bias between the two data sets is 0.6 ppmv for XCO 2 and 0.5 ppbv for XCH 4 . With the presented long-term stability, the EM27/SUN qualifies as an useful supplement to the existing TCCON network in remote areas. To achieve consistent performance, such an extension requires careful testing of any spectrometers involved by application of common quality assurance measures. One major aim of the COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network (COCCON) infrastructure is to provide these services to all EM27/SUN operators. In the framework of COC-CON development, the performance of an ensemble of 30 EM27/SUN spectrometers was tested and found to be very uniform, enhanced by the centralized inspection performed at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology prior to deployment. Taking into account measured instrumental line shape parameters for each spectrometer, the resulting average bias across the ensemble with respect to the reference EM27/SUN used in the long-term study in XCO 2 is 0.20 ppmv, while it is 0.8 ppbv for XCH 4 . The average standard deviation of the ensemble is 0.13 ppmv for XCO 2 and 0.6 ppbv for XCH 4 . In addition to the robust metric based on absolute differences, we calculate the standard deviation among the empirical calibration factors. The resulting 2σ uncertainty is 0.6 ppmv for XCO 2 and 2.2 ppbv for XCH 4 . As indicated by the executed long-term study on one device presented here, the remaining empirical calibration factor deduced for each individual instrument can be assumed constant over time. Therefore the application of these empirical factors is expected to further improve the EM27/SUN network conformity beyond the scatter among the empirical calibration factors reported above.

Abstract. Particle depolarization ratio retrieved from lidar measurements are commonly used for aerosol-typing studies, microphysical inversion, or mass concentration retrievals. The particle depolarization ratio is one of the primary parameters that can differentiate several major aerosol components but only if the measurements are accurate enough. The accuracy related to the retrieval of particle depolarization ratios is the driving factor for assessing and improving the uncertainties of the depolarization products. This paper presents different depolarization calibration procedures used to improve the quality of the depolarization data. The results illustrate a significant improvement of the depolarization lidar products for all the selected lidar stations that have implemented depolarization calibration procedures. The calibrated volume and particle depolarization profiles at 532 nm show values that fall within a range that is generally accepted in the literature.
On the morning of 23 March 2018, an unusual phenomenon was observed over Romania where the southeastern part of the country was covered in a fresh-layer of orange snow. The event was extensively reported in mass-media and social-media and raised questions about the origin and the possible impact of the orange snow. Even if this type of events, intrusions of Saharan dust, have been reported before in Romania, and in Europe in general, their occurrence during negative temperature conditions is very rare. Saharan dust intrusion occurs over Europe mainly during spring and, in general, is not accompanied by snow at low altitudes. In this article, for the first time, the synoptic-scale conditions leading to the Saharan dust intrusion over Romania and the chemical and physical properties of the deposited dust particles in a snow layer were analyzed. The Saharan dust event affected a permanent atmospheric measurement research infrastructure located southwest of Bucharest, the capital city of Romania. In-situ and remote sensing measurements conducted at this research infrastructure allowed the identification of the dust source as the north Sahara. The source was confirmed by the elemental ratios of the main components (e.g., Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, K). For example, the (Ca+Mg)/Fe ratio of 1.39 was characteristic for the north Sahara. The dust morphology and the minerals were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy disperse X-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDX). The size distribution of the particle geometric diameter showed that they are centred on 1 μ m, but larger particles up to 40 μ m are also present. To visualize the minerals, an approach was developed which emphasized the presence of the calcite, quartz or clay minerals. The optical parameters of dust were measured by re-suspending the particles. Values of the optical parameters (i.e., asymmetry parameter at 550 nm was 0.604, single scattering albedo was 0.84–0.89) were similar to those measured for Saharan dust intrusions over the Iberian Peninsula. Also, the non-refractory particles found in the dust-contaminated snow layer were analyzed, indicating the presence of HULIS-like compounds, most probably advected from the Mediterranean sea.
The bioclimatology of thermal stress over Europe between 1979 and 2019 was analysed using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) derived from ERA5‐HEAT reanalysis. The bioclimatology of different European regions was assessed using Köppen–Geiger climate classification. The annual number of hours with heat stress (UTCI > 32°C) increased significantly during the study period for all the analysed Köppen–Geiger climate subclasses, showing also a clear increase towards southern Europe. The highest percentage of hours (20% of all hours) with cold stress (UTCI < −13°C) occur over northern Europe. A significant increasing trend (>0.05 hr·year−1) in the number of hours with heat stress was observed for 23 out of 32 analysed European cities representative for the Köppen–Geiger climate subclasses. For these cities not only the number of hours with heat stress has increased but also the heat stress is more persistent, while the number of cases and the persistence of the periods with cold stress have decreased over the last four decades. The UTCI values showed a statistically significant increase between 0.6 and 3.2°C for all the analysed cities over the study period reflecting the rising of global mean temperatures.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
