Our findings indicate distinct differences in the epidemics in pregnant women across Europe. The evolution of the MTCT epidemic in Ukraine does not appear to be following the same pattern as that in Western Europe in the 1980s and 1990s. Although uptake of preventive MTCT prophylaxis has been rapid in both Western Europe and Ukraine, substantial challenges remain in the more resource-constrained setting in Eastern Europe.
Our results evidence a high frequency of the -44 CC allele in HIV-1 infected mothers and their children with augmented potential risk of maternal fetal transmission. This potential vertical transmission risk has been successfully prevented by antiretroviral drug treatment and cesarian section of the HIV-1 positive mothers.
Given the high prevalence of diabetes, the high proportion of patients potentially not identified with a selective screening in this study and the relatively low cost, universal screening for gestational diabetes seems the best way to identify patients and prevent adverse obstetrical and neonatal outcomes.
