1‐allyloxy‐2‐hydroxy‐propyl‐starch: Synthesis and characterization

Abstract: New reactive unsaturated starch derivatives, 1-allyloxy-2-hydroxy-propylstarches (AHP-starches), were synthesized by the reaction of waxy maize starch (WMS) and amylose-enriched maize starch (AEMS) with allyl glycidyl ether in a heterogeneous alkaline suspension containing NaOH and Na 2 SO 4 . The degree of substitution (DS) was determined by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, and a DS of 0.20 6 0.01 was found for both AHP-WMS and AHP-AEMS, respectively. The AHP derivatives of WMS and AEMS were further characterized with 1… Show more

“…Table 1 displays the reaction conditions and results of homogeneous synthesis of AHP-cellulose in 7 wt% NaOH/12 wt% urea aqueous solution. The DS of the polysaccharide derivatives with allyl groups could be estimated by several methods, such as 1 H NMR spectroscopy (Petri et al 1999;Huijbrechts et al 2007;Duanmu et al 2007), elemental analysis method (Heinze et al 2008) and titration (Martin 1949). Here, we used the 1 H NMR spectroscopy after peracetylation (Huijbrechts et al 2007) and elemental analysis after bromination to determine the DS of AHPcellulose.…”

“…The DS of the AHP-cellulose was determined by the integration of 1 H NMR spectra of peracetylated samples in DMSO-d6 using maleic acid (MA) as an internal standard (Huijbrechts et al 2007). MA gives a singlet at 6.2 ppm (2 H atoms) in 1 H NMR spectra.…”

“…The synthesis of bio-based EPs is feasible from different natural materials such as wood biomass [1], industrial lignin [2] and starch [3]. One of the most common methods to prepare bio-based EPs is the epoxidation of different vegetable oils, which are basically fatty acid esters of glycerol [4][5][6][7][8].…”
