1-Hydroxypyrene as a biomarker of PAH exposure among subjects living in two separate regions from a steel mill

Abstract: Our findings are consistent with the interpretation that residents nearby to a steel mill are exposed to PAHs through ambient exposures.

“…The gender effect was inconsistent. Several studies reported higher 1-OHP levels for girls (12,16), whereas others reported higher levels for boys (15,26). This study found significantly higher level of 1-OHP for girls when creatinine-adjusted log-transformed values were analyzed (estimate = 0.087; P = 0.031), whereas the difference was not statistically significant with creatinine-unadjusted values (estimate = 0.004; P = 0.941).…”

“…Children's daily doses of PAHs are often higher than adults' when normalized for body weight. Van Wijnen et al (1996) were the Wrst to report on PAH levels in children, and several subsequent studies have also examined children's exposures (Siwinska et al 1999;Vyskocil et al 2000;Hansen et al 2006;Mucha et al 2006;Lee et al 2007). Diet has been identiWed as the primary source of PAH exposure, but the contribution of indoor and outdoor sources is not clear.…”
