10 Altered Sensory Function and Balance in Older Persons

Abstract: The effects of three different visual inputs (eyes open, eyes closed, and inaccurate) while standing on an unstable surface (respectively, UEO, UEC, UI) were compared in a group of healthy elderly community dwellers (N = 239; mean age 76) and young (N = 34; mean age 34) adults. Subjects with medical factors known to affect balance were excluded. Body sway and loss of balance measured dynamic force platform (EquiTest, NeuroCom International). Visual and somatosensory inputs were rendered inaccurate through tilt… Show more

“…We would expect noise-like effects to be relatively independent of the external sensory environment. The fact that elderly exhibited different coordination than young with visual sway-referencing, points instead at increased dependence on visual inputs as has been reported by others [1,27,28]. Manchester et al [12] noted that body sway was greater when subjects' eyes were open in the dark than when their eyes were closed.…”

“…It is well known that balance is impaired with increasing age (1,2) and with lower extremity pathology. Knee osteoarthritis (OA), one of the most common chronic health conditions, is associated with significant impairment and disability (3), and predominantly affects the elderly population (4).…”

“…The parameters reported in LOS significantly correlated with the activity of ADL (i.e. getting out of bed, stair climbing and walking) like others [46,47].…”
