100 Questions: identifying research priorities for poverty prevention and reduction

Abstract: Reducing poverty is important for those affected, for society and the economy. Poverty remains entrenched in the UK, despite considerable research efforts to understand its causes and possible solutions. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, with the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge, ran a democratic, transparent, consensual exercise involving 45 participants from government, non-governmental organisations, academia and research to identify 100 important research questions that, if answer… Show more

“…In their method, the scientists and stakeholders gathered in a workshop setting are assigned to collaborate on selecting high-priority research questions from many ideas proposed by diverse individuals through an iterative process of voting and deliberation. The method has been applied to the various sustainability challenges such as biodiversity (Sutherland et al, 2009), agriculture (Pretty et al, 2010), poverty reduction (Sutherland et al, 2013), sustainable development goals (Oldekop et al, 2016) and water-energy-food nexus (Green et al, 2017). A similar method was also used in Future Earth to define its strategic research agendas (Future Earth, 2014).…”

“…The identification of knowledge needs that are of relevance to policymakers and practitioners and the prioritization of these needs is itself a research exercise, for which a systematic methodology has been developed (Sutherland et al 2006(Sutherland et al , 2011. Terrestrial examples of its application include the identification and prioritization of questions of policy relevance in the fields of ecology (Sutherland et al 2006), agriculture (Pretty et al 2010), and knowledge needs for evidencebased conservation of wild insect pollinators (Dicks et al 2012) for enhanced sustainable agriculture (Dicks et al 2013), UK food security (Ingram et al 2013) and even poverty alleviation (Sutherland et al 2013). The strength of this methodology lies in the implementation of a collaborative, cross-sectoral approach based on 'experiential, theoretical and empirical knowledge' (Nutley et al 2007;Dicks et al 2012).…”
