11β-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 2 and Mineralocorticoid Receptor in Human Fetal Development

Abstract: 11Beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II (11betaHSD2) confers specificity on the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) by converting biologically active glucocorticoids to inactive 11-keto metabolites. The biological significance of 11betaHSD2 activity during fetal development is currently being explored, but the temporal and spatial distributions of the enzyme and receptor have not been examined. We therefore examined their distributions during various stages of human fetal development using immunohistochemistry… Show more

“…P4503A7 has higher 16a-and 6b-hydroxylation activities [21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. Increased amounts of 11-oxo metabolites and decreased amounts of 11b-hydroxy metabolites of cortisol in newborn infants are due to higher 11b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type II activity in fetal kidney, skin, and colon [28,29]. Other metabolites such as metabolites of Abbreviations: "No.…”

“…In humans, placental tissue at term revealed greater 11b-HSD2 enzyme activity than samples from 8±12 and 13±20 weeks (13). Another study with a small number of samples could not detect any difference in placental 11b-HSD2 immunoreactivity or mRNA expression measured by northern blot expression during gestation (14). However, no studies on 11b-HSD2 to quantify gene expression during pregnancy in humans have yet been performed.…”
