125 Jahre Flüssigkristalle – die wissenschaftliche Revolution im Wohnzimmer

Abstract: Kommunikativ: Nach Reinitzers Entdeckung der Flüssigkristalle gab es über 30 Jahre einen interdisziplinären Gelehrtenstreit.

“…Liquid crystals (LCs) have been extensively studied because of their controllability of molecular alignment with external fields. [1] LC displays are good examples of such applications of LCs: the alignment of LC molecules is switched using electricity to control the transmission of light. Various LC molecules have been designed to improve the performance of materials.…”

“…[31,32] Liquid crystals would revolutionize this domain and give rise to nothing less than the creation of a new industry leading to low-power-consumption flat display screens. Paradoxically, liquid-crystal research then started to decline.…”

“…A great revival occurred in the sixties spurred on by opportunities to use liquid crystals in information-display technology. [31,32] Liquid crystals would revolutionize this domain and give rise to nothing less than the creation of a new industry leading to low-power-consumption flat display screens.…”
