128-slice CT angiography of the aorta without ECG-gating: efficacy of faster gantry rotation time and iterative reconstruction in terms of image quality and radiation dose

Abstract: • CT image quality of aortic root-ascending aorta is challenging. • Non ECG-gated scans are often limited by pulsatility artefacts. • ECG-gated examinations are usually limited by high radiation doses. • Non ECG-gated 128-slice low dose CTAA provides high quality images. • 128-slice CTAA low dose protocol could frequently replace ECG-gated CTAA.

“…-Mean values and standard deviation of aortoiliac attenuation, noise, and CNR in cohort B are listed in Table 3. No relationship was observed between tube voltage and aortoiliac attenuation (P = .108; slope, 1.45; 95% CI: 20.33, 3.22) (22,23), with an estimated dose per CT angiographic examination of 9.7 and 11.6 mSv. In our study, the full potential of ATVS for radiation dose reduction was not exploited.…”

“…Sahani et al (17) reported similar image quality for standard CTA and DS-CTA in abdominopelvic vessels; however, they did not explore quantitative metrics. Moreover, Russo et al (18) reported quantitative parameters of 128-slice scanner with high-speed rotation time for imaging thoracoabdominal aorta. In particular, they showed minor motion artifacts and good quality of images also in the abdominal aorta.…”

“…Furthermore, the use of fast acquisition would allow reduction of contrast agent, which is again of paramount importance for longterm follow-up. Possibility of reducing volume of contrast agent has been recently reported with promising results (18)(19)(20).…”
