This research discusses a single case study of a first-grade Latino English Learner (EL) student, Allen (pseudonym), from a larger inquiry-based intervention on inversion and mental reversibility development. The purpose of this case study was to develop a better understanding of the relationship between Allen's English language proficiency and his ability to solve inversion and compensation mathematics tasks. The integration of multiple paradigms confronting radical constructivism and sociocultural theory of learning via culturally relevant pedagogy provided us with a multi-faceted set of perspectives in understanding the interconnection between Allen's cultural and linguistic background and his development of algebraic reasoning. Through conceptual and retrospective analyses, we found that Allen's language features are highly correlated with the development of his thinking strategies and his ability to solve mathematics tasks. Implications of this study include the development of teaching strategies that address critical issues in mathematics, such as the individual differences of learners, specifically ELs from Latino background. We suggest further research is needed in the field of language acquisition and access to STEM related concepts.

The main objective of this research is to analyse the visual portrayal of the way the Spanish press transmits news items dealing with the arrival of the above mentioned immigrants. The data of this article consists of all the news items published upon arrival of these immigrants in the digital edition of the two most popular Spanish newspapers (ie. El País and ABC), from 1 June 2011 to 1 January 2015. For its framework of analysis, the study draws on the principles of critical discourse analysis and visual grammar in order to observe the main visual strategies used by the press to portray the immigrants under analysis. The study reveals that immigrants are represented dysphemistically, which means that the negative aspects of them and their arrival are highlighted. The results show that the general tendency is to represent sub-Saharan immigrants as victims, distanced from the readers and as strangers and different from the majority group. Moreover, they are portrayed as vulnerable and dependent people who are sick or in need or, in other words, as a people-problem. This paper is about the introduction and use of Multimodal Analysis (MDA) as a research methodology in subtitling of audiovisual products. Its aim is to show the contribution of the MDA to the analysis of multi-semiotic resources in audiovisual products and their influences on the subtitling. Although many scholars have realized that audiovisual products employ different types of signs to create meanings, the focus remains primarily on their linguistic features. The paper elaborates on the theoretical and practical aspects of the MDA methodology, and provides a case study to show how the methodology works in the subtitling process of audiovisual products, in particular the subtitling of interviews. Finally, it concludes the paper with some suggestions for further research.
