14.5L: Late‐News Paper: A High Efficiency Mobile Projection Engine Utilizing Color Sequential Illumination

Abstract: We present a high light efficiency and low power consumption projection engine for mobile device applications. Efficient light coupling and color mixing, high contrast reflective polarization & recycling, and precision molded optics were combined to achieve this high performance LED/LCOS‐based system having a 10.5 mm light engine thickness and demonstrating 8.0 lm/W.

“…Typical LED pico-projectors have a throw ratio (image diagonal: distance to the screen) from about 1:1 to 0.5:1. 28 Because laser light has a higher fnumber, it will be possible to make very short throw optical engines 29,30 with throw ratios on the order of 5:1 and with 100% offset (relative to the projected plane). This means that an engine only ~3 in.…”

“…Lasers can be used to illuminate the same type of light valves that are also employed with lamps or LEDs: LCDs, DMD displays, or LCoS displays. 2 Besides, lasers also enable the realization of new types of projection displays. Among them are flying-spot and grating light-valve projection (GLV) systems, where the laser beam is scanned over the projection screen and the information is written pixel by pixel (flying-spot) 3 or line by line as in the case of GLV systems.…”

“…Mobile devices are becoming an important part of our daily life. The emerging embedded, detachable or portable standalone projection optical modules [1][2] may greatly broaden the applications in not only entertainments but also business. With the improvement in high resolution spatial light modulators, LEDs with higher efficiency, and compact optics, this ongoing trend will provide a potential unique selling point for handheld electronic devices.…”
