“…The numerous dams and reservoirs built in the upper Yangtze River basin, particularly after the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, have reduced the delivery of TP to the middle and lower basins by 77% (Zhou et al, 2013). The retention of reactive P in Luxembourg's terrace dams increases progressively after passing through each dam (Salvia-Castellvi et al, 2001). Currently, research on the cumulative effects of cascades is insufficient, which is an urgent problem to solve.…”

“…Surface water retention systems have shown success in reducing nutrient and sediment loading in various locations worldwide. Within America and Europe, retention systems have reduced total nitrogen by 38-56% and total phosphorus by 17-82%, with reduction levels dependent on the size and type of retention system (Tiessen et al 2011;Sharpley et al 1996;Kovacic et al 2006;Salvia-Castellvi et al 2001;Avilés and Niell 2007;Uusi-Kämppä et al 2000). On the Canadian Prairies, dams were found effective in reducing total suspended sediment (65-85% reduction), particulate nitrogen (41-43% reduction during snowmelt, 7-11% reduction from summer rainfall events), and particulate phosphorus (27-38% reduction in snowmelt runoff) (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada 2012).…”

“…Pollution from agriculture and sewage is recognized as having a significant negative impact on water quality and aquatic biota [2], besides the fish stock [3]. The biological reaction of aquatic system to nutrient enrichment is the eutrophication, the eventual conesquence of which is the development of primary production to nuisance proportions [4]. Free dissolved phospho-rus and nitrogen are important nutrients for photosynthetic organisms [5], mainly for cyanobacterial blooms [6,7].…”
