150 J DPSSL operating at 1.5 kW level

Abstract: We report on obtaining output energy of 146 J in 10 ns long pulses at 10 Hz repetition rate from Bivoj, a multi-Joule multi-slab cryogenic gas-cooled diode pumped solid state laser, by overcoming its damage threshold bottleneck. This is a 40% energy and power increase of the laser system in comparison to our previous publication and to the most powerful multi-Joule high power laser system.

“…Once the required pump energy is reduced to less than ≈1/10, e.g., 50-100 J nanosecond pulses centered at 515/527 nm, the cryogenic gas-cooled diode pumped Yb:YAG lasers can meet the require-ment and importantly which now can operate at 1-10 Hz. [365][366][367] In this case, dramatically reducing pulse duration can realize the high-repetition short-pulse PW laser.…”

“…This laser is based on the Scalable High power Advanced Radiographic Capability (SHARC) laser concept [3], and it implements direct chirped pulse amplification (CPA) in the diode-pumped, gas-cooled slab architecture developed for the Mercury laser [4] and implemented in the pump laser for the HAPLS laser system [5]. Helium gas-cooling was also employed in the Bivoj/DiPOLE laser system based on diode-pumped Yb:YAG at cryogenic temperature that has been demonstrated to produce 146 J, 10 ns duration pulses at 10 Hz repetition rate [6]. A high-level, conceptual rendering of the laser system with the major subsystems overlaid is shown in Figure 2(a), and a block diagram of the laser system is shown in Figure 2(b).…”
