18.4L: Late‐News Paper: Full Color Flexible Top‐emission AMOLED Display on Polyethylene Naphthalate (PEN) Foil with Metal Oxide TFTs Backplane

Abstract: We have developed a full color flexible top‐emission AMOLED display with 80 ppi resolution using In‐Ga‐Zn‐O TFT backplane on PEN foil under the maximum process temperature of 150 oC. Notwithstanding the low processing temperature, the TFTs with SiOx passivation layer show high reliability with VTH shift of less than 0.2 V at 10,000 seconds under bias‐stress of −10 V.

“…Given the recent progresses achieved in the large-area integration of flexible devices, a relevant part of the review has focused on circuits, as well as on systems based on metal oxide semiconductor TFTs. Examples of novel large-area flexible electronic systems include flexible, textile-integrated, rollable and/or foldable optical displays, 39,40,127,158,175,176,203,214,310,316,[346][347][348][349][350][351][352] flexible and/or stretchable systems for temperature, 343 pH, 166,185 and x-ray sensing, 322,355,356 wireless power transmission, 81,315 as well as non-volatile storage and NFC transmission of data. 136,167,204,315 Despite the advances that flexible metal oxide semiconductor TFTs have witnessed in the last decade, there are still some bottlenecks that prevent the commercialization of this technology in new areas of application beyond optical displays.…”

“…[24], [62], [107]- [114] As demonstrated at several Society for Information Display (SID) conferences, lightweight and flexible displays have become commercially successful. [115]- [118] Though usually not classified as a display, a colorimetric sensor resembles a display, [119] especially when it conveys easily intelligible combinatoric information. It thus qualifies as a (typically) one-time use display, often implemented on paper or other low-cost substrates.…”

“…A QQVGA (160x 120x 3 subpixel) AMOLED display with 85ppi (300μmx300μm) was realized on the same substrate. For high resolution mobile displays, the preferred architecture is a top-emitting display including a third metallization layer as the anode [6]. This allows a very high aperture because the emitting area is on top of the pixel engine.…”
