1844/2004/2044: The Return of Species-Being

Abstract: autonomist, poststructuralist Marxist version of species-being. The starting point for such an interpretation is the unusual, and largely unnoticed, reinstatement of themes from the 1844 Manuscripts in Gilles Deleuze's and Félix Guattari's deliriously vitalist and resolutely anti-humanist Marxism. 6 Further suggestions of such an account of species-being can be found not only in the works of Spivak and Read already mentioned, but also in a fascinating study by Joseph Margolis, and in the writings of Thomas Ke… Show more

“…This is a model heavily dependent on globalized world trade and weakened national and local sovereignty. Capitalist neoliberalism is simultaneously responsible for high levels of economic growth and accompanying advances in poverty reduction, but it has also greatly increased inequality in and between nations and is responsible for incredible ecological catastrophes, of which global climate change is a part (Dyer- Witheford, 2004;McCarthy and Prudham, 2004;Heynen and Robbins, 2005;Heynen et al, 2007;Bakker, 2009). A different economic model are the challenges being mounted by both right wing and left wing "populist" forces, which is dependent on the rhetoric of re-strengthening the nation-state and keeping world trade in check according to national interests.…”

“…Moreover, as he argues, Marx's view of establishing a sensitive and responsible metabolic relation to more than human nature, includes an ethical and compassionate relation to other species. For other kindred contemporary attempts to rethink the concept of a "species-being" with a view towards distinctive human powers and capacities to reconstruct our relationship with the rest of nature that avoids any semblance of 'species imperialism' see Harvey (2000) and Dyer-Witheford (2004).…”
