18F-FDG PET/CT features of pulmonary sclerosing hemangioma

Abstract: The majority of PSHs show increased FDG uptakes, and their SUVmax values are significantly correlated with their tumor size. PSH ≥2 cm can frequently be falsely interpreted as malignancy in FDG-PET/CT. Further studies with large study population are warranted to confirm our observations.

“…PSH has been reported to show various FDG accumulations, with an SUVmax ranging from the background value to 5.3, and the results of the present study were similar to these of previously reported cases (7,(19)(20)(21). FDG PET/CT scan results are usually interpreted as positive for malignancy when the SUVmax of a lung nodule or mass exceeds 2.5 (22).…”

“…Lin et al (7) observed that larger PSHs tended to show higher FDG uptake on PET/CT scan. Lee et al (21) reported that the SUVmax was significantly correlated with tumor size in 8 cases of PSH. However, in the present study of 12 PSH cases, there was no significant correlation between the SUVmax and the tumor size.…”

“…An "air meniscus sign" is frequently observed around the tumour [4]. Although benign, the great majority of sclerosing pneumocytoma present increased uptake on 18 FDG positron emission tomography with standardized uptake values (SUV) that are significantly correlated with tumour size [5].…”

“…PSH has been associated with increased FDG uptake and false positive results on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT [8,11]. Lee et al [8] studied 8 patients with 10 PSHs and found that tumors larger than 2 cm can frequently be falsely interpreted as malignancy in FDG-PET/CT.…”
