Show more

“…Likewise, but with much less technical effort, ventilation can be visualized using fluorinated gases. This has been demonstrated mainly for SF 6 and C 2 F 6 (11–19). Because of the natural Boltzmann polarization state of these gases, the image quality imposes limits to temporal resolution.…”

“…The low spin density of the intrapulmonary gas mixture is compensated by using either a high number of signal averages [17,18] or by increasing the spin density by filling in a fluid compatible with gas exchange [19]. Inert fluorinated gases, such as tetrafluoromethane (CF4), hexafluoroethane (C2F6), or sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), possess a T1 time of the order of milliseconds [17].…”

“…The static approach for estimation of the ventilation-perfusion ratio in an animal model with partially obstructed left bronchi was achieved by measuring the ratio of the signal intensity using SF6 in combination with high and low O2 concentration. Imaging within a single breathhold becomes feasible by the use of ultrafast gradientecho sequences [18,21]. Image stacks with a spatial res- (Fig.…”
