Reactions of either Pd(0) phosphine complexes with dipyridyldichalcogenides or [PdCl2(P∩P)] (P∩P = dppe, dppp) with pyridylchalcogenolate ions have been examined and a variety of Pd(II) complexes have been isolated and characterized. Oxidative addition of {SeC5H3(3-R)N}2 (R = H or Me) to [Pd(P∩P)2] (P∩P = dppe, dppp) gave either a mononuclear complex, [Pd{2-Se-C5H3(3-R)N}2(P∩P)] (for P∩P/R: dppe/H or Me; dppp/H) or a cationic binuclear complex, [Pd2{μ-SeC5H3(3-Me)N}2(dppp)2]2+ (4b) (R = Me) whereas reactions involving the tellurium analogue exclusively afforded trinuclear complexes, [Pd3(μ-Te)2(P∩P)3]Cl2 (P∩P = dppe (2) or dppp (6)). The latter was also obtained in the substitution reaction between [PdCl2(P∩P)] and NaTeC5H3(3-R)N. The substitution reactions between [PdCl2(dppe)] and Pb{EC5H3(3-R)N}2 yielded mononuclear complexes, [Pd{2-E-C5H3(3-R)N}2(dppe)] (1a–1e) (E = S, Se or Te) while in the case of [PdCl2(dppp)], the reactions resulted in the formation of mono-, bi- and tri- nuclear complexes depending on the nature of the chalcogen atom (E = S, Se or Te) and the substituent on the pyridyl ring (R = H or Me). Treatment of dipyridyl ditellurides, {TeC5H3(3-R)N}2 (R = H or Me), with [Pd(PPh3)4] gave expected tellurolate complexes, [Pd{2-TeC5H3(3-R)N}2(PPh3)2] (7a, 7b) which on prolonged standing in CDCl3 solution gave green crystals of [PdCl{2-Te(Cl)2C5H3(3-Me)N}(PPh3)] (9). The molecular structures of {TeC5H3(3-Me)N}2, [Pd2{μ-TeC5H3(3-Me)N}2(dppp)2]Cl2·3H2O (5·3H2O), [Pd3(μ-Te)2(dppp)3]Cl2·3CHCl3 (6·3CHCl3) and [PdCl{2-Te(Cl)2C5H3(3-Me)N}(PPh3)] (9) were established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

The 3 centre-4 electrons (3c-4e) and the donor/acceptor or charge-transfer models for the description of the chemical bond in linear three-body systems, such as I3 − and related electron-rich (22 shell electrons) systems, are comparatively discussed on the grounds of structural data from a search of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). Both models account for a total bond order of 1 in these systems, and while the former fits better symmetric systems, the latter describes better strongly asymmetric situations. The 3c-4e MO scheme shows that any linear system formed by three aligned closed-shell species (24 shell electrons overall) has reason to exist provided that two electrons are removed from it to afford a 22 shell electrons three-body system: all combinations of three closed-shell halides and/or chalcogenides are considered here. A survey of the literature shows that most of these three-body systems exist. With some exceptions, their structural features vary continuously from the symmetric situation showing two equal bonds to very asymmetric situations in which one bond approaches to the value corresponding to a single bond and the second one to the sum of the van der Waals radii of the involved atoms. This indicates that the potential energy surface of these three-body systems is fairly flat, and that the chemical surrounding of the chalcogen/halogen atoms can play an important role in freezing different structural situations; this is well documented for the I3 − anion. The existence of correlations between the two bond distances and more importantly the linearity observed for all these systems, independently on the degree of their asymmetry, support the state of hypervalency of the central atom.

In the current chapter we provide a catalog of functional groups containing the chalcogens selenium and tellurium where by functional group we mean the central atom, Se or Te, and its local arrangement of atoms bonded to it by single or multiple bonds (its neighborhood). We will do so by cataloging examples of compounds containing the groups. The atoms that define the local neighborhood are limited here to H, C, N, the chalcogens O, S, Se, Te, and the halogens F, Cl, Br and I. As such we avoid Se‐ and Te‐bonding to metals and metalloids and so we will ignore all salts, and we also ignore all groups with formal charges. However arbitrarily, we did include complexes involving species wherein, with appropriate bond‐shifting, we can draw the compound of interest without any formal charges. We have also avoided mention of free radicals and other species with unpaired electrons. All of the groups were explicitly chosen, and have at least one carbon attached to the selenium or tellurium. For each group we generally give one compound as an example (admittedly our choice of name is often unsystematic), a reference to the primary literature (again chosen unsystematically), and the CAS RN for the example compound (when available). Where there is no example we will generally explicitly say so, occasionally with due annotation as NO CAS RN or “no compounds identified” to encourage their study.
