2νββ decay of 76Ge into excited states with GERDA phase I

Abstract: Abstract. Two neutrino double beta decay of 76 Ge to excited states of 76 Se has been studied using data from Phase I of the Gerda experiment. An array composed of up to 14 germanium detectors including detectors that have been isotopically enriched in 76 Ge was deployed in liquid argon. The analysis of various possible transitions to excited final states is based on coincidence events between pairs of detectors where a de-excitation γ ray is detected in one detector and the two electrons in the other. No signa… Show more

“…2νββ decays to excited states have also been observed in 150 Nd in 2004 [10] and again in 2014 where the γ coincidence was explicitly measured [11]. More recently, current 0νββ experiments such as Gerda [12] and KamLAND-Zen [13] have searched for decays to excited states using 76 Ge and 136 Xe, respectively. Figure 1 shows the energy level scheme of the ββ decay of 136 Xe.…”

“…The 3" PMTs are installed on copper plates at the two ends of the cylindrical LAr volume facing inwards (see Figs. 10,11). These end plates are separated from the central fiber section by copper shrouds of 60 cm height.…”

“…No signal was found for 0νββ decay, and a new 90% confidence level (CL) limit of T 0ν 1/2 > 2.1 × 10 25 year was derived (median sensitivity 2.4×10 25 year) that strongly disfavored a previous claim of observation [8,9]. Further Phase I results include a much improved half-life for 2νββ decay of 76 Ge and improved limits for Majoron ββ decay modes [10], as well as 2νββ decays of 76 Ge into excited states of 76 Se [11].…”

“…The measurement of the half-life of the neutrino accompanied double beta decay of 76 Ge by GERDA corresponds to 5.04 kg yr of exposure [8]. The observed spectrum in the energy range between 600 and 1800 keV is dominated by the double beta decay of 76 Ge.…”
