“…Given the lack of representation and chilly climates for Latinx, particularly Latinas, in computer science (Chang, 2018;Dunbar-Hester, 2019;Ong et al, 2011;McGee, 2020a,b;Rodríguez and Blaney, 2020;Rodríguez and Lehman, 2018;Seymour and Hunter, 2019), developing culturally relevant and supportive organizational practices in computer science departments is essential to advance these students' success (Mack et al, 2019). Because the department represents the nexus where students engage with their institutions and major discipline (Chapman, 2020), it is a central site to implement equity-centered reforms in science fields more generally (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2019; Hrabowski, 2019) and in computer science specifically (Mack et al, 2019). Faculty, who hold the most daily responsibilities in working with students and central contributors to student success (Mayhew et al, 2016), most directly identify with the department as their primary work environment (Kezar et al, 2015).…”

“…As Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs), these institutions have the potential to disrupt those patterns through promoting a sense of belonging, culturally relevant curriculum and programming, a commitment to hiring faculty of color, and pushing for restorative justice (Garcia et al, 2019). However, Latinx students at HSIs may still experience a hostile campus environments that challenge their sense of belonging and academic success particularly within computing spaces (Chapman, 2020; Cuellar & Johnson-Ahorlu, 2016; Faye-Carter et al, 2019; Sanchez, 2019). Research shows that racial identity development at HSIs is highly dependent on the educational experiences of students as well as which identities are most salient to a student’s journey (e.g., race, age, socioeconomic status; Garcia & Dwyer, 2018; Garcia et al, 2018).…”
