20.3L: Late‐News Paper: Flexible AMOLED Display Driven by Organic TFTs on a Plastic Substrate

Abstract: OTFTs are fundamentally the most flexible transistor technology available. Combined with recent improvements in organic materials, this offers a route to truly flexible AMOLED displays, which will transform new markets such as wearables. Plastic Logic has developed a flexible OTFT AMOLED display using low temperature processes compatible with mass manufacturing.

“…Moreover, the combination of superior dimensional stability, low stress, and excellent adhesion also provide a compelling case for the penetration of PST into the emerging area of OTFT (organic TFT)-based flexible arrays. 22 The data in Table 2 also highlight the excellent optical characteristics of PST beyond transparency, such as low haze, very low birefringence, and low yellow index. These reveal another host of frontplane applications for PST that are difficult (or impossible) to access by competing material solutions (e.g., CPI) due to inferior characteristics and/or high cost.…”

“…Since oxide‐TFT fabrication can be accomplished at a temperature range that is compatible with PST, 18–21 PST will not only be a very desirable substrate option for oxide‐based flexible displays, but its very availability should spur market evolution to oxide TFTs. “…Active matrix display demonstrators are designed with a resolution of 100 ppi, 4 inch diagonal size. Backplane processing is adapted from the approach described in [5]. Top-gate transistors are built on commercial flexible barrier substrates with a size of 200 mm by 200 mm.…”

“…The display showed no degradation under 4-mm radius rollup and release cycle over 1000 times. The OTFT backplane made by Plastic Logic survived a onetime compressive bend at a radius of curvature of 0.5 mm without damage (Harrison et al 2014).…”
