We report on the superior transistor performance of the vertical organic field-effect transistor (V-OFET), achieving up to 30x higher on-currents than for reference horizontal organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with 30 µm channel length and same organic semiconductor material. Furthermore, V-OFETs show excellent on/off ratios (>10 6 ), good current saturation, and high operational stability. We describe the integration of V-OFETs as drive transistors into flexible backplanes. We demonstrate flexible AMOLED display prototypes with 100 PPI resolution and 4 inch diagonal size fabricated on low-cost plastic substrates. This novel backplane technology based on organic materials shows promise to greatly enhance the flexibility of future AMOLED displays.
