Marie Starzer,

Carsten Hjorthøj
et al.

Abstract: This study aimed to identify the 20‐year trajectories of positive and negative symptoms after the first psychotic episode in a sample of patients with an ICD‐10 diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder, and to investigate the baseline characteristics and long‐term outcomes associated with these trajectories. A total of 373 participants in the OPUS trial were included in the study. Symptoms were assessed at baseline and after 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 years using the Scales for the Assessment of Positive and Negat… Show more

“…The positive association of DUP with the 1-year PANSS negative score in our study is in agreement with the previous findings discussed below [61]. Advanced synthesis of existing data through a recent umbrella review and random-effects meta-analysis suggests a consistent pattern: longer DUP correlates with more pronounced negative symptoms both at initial presentation and during follow-up [62].…”

“…People presenting with the same diagnosis of either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder show a large heterogeneity in clinical presentation and extreme variability for the biological factors, neurobiological markers, and environmental variables associated with their pathology. 257 , 258 This interindividual variability has hindered research in the field of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder since it has also affected the identification of the pathophysiological mechanisms underpinning their onset.…”

“…More recently, studies focusing on the clinical high-risk and ultra-high-risk populations have found that patients with high sensitivity to stress and a tendency to develop negative depressive states are at higher risk of developing full-blown psychotic disorders [ 17 , 18 , 19 ]. In addition, experience sampling studies have found that patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders exhibit more negative affect in their daily lives, while laboratory studies have shown that these patients have a bias toward judging neutral stimuli as more negative.…”
