2014 iAREA campaign on aerosol in Spitsbergen – Part 1: Study of physical and chemical properties

Abstract: h i g h l i g h t sComplex studies on aerosol properties during spring on Spitsbergen are presented. In-situ, remote sensing instruments and model results are included in the campaign. Scattering properties were found to be correlated with wind speed. Some sea-spray advections are detected and described in detail. Spring 2014 seems to be relatively clean with only a small load of Arctic Haze events. a r t i c l e i n f o . The subject of this study is to investigate the inesitu, passive and active remote sensi… Show more

“…Ny-Ålesund (78 • 55 25" N, 11 • 55 21" E) is a research town in the Oscar II Land on the island of Spitsbergen. The research stations are placed on the southern shore of Kongsfjorden [55]. Aerosol in situ measurements were made in the Gruvebadet laboratory (78.918 • N, 11.895 • E; 61 m a.s.l.…”

“…At the peak of the event (11 July) surface aerosol scattering and absorbing coefficients exceeded an extremely high value of 130 and 15 Mm À1 for 530 nm. Typical scattering coefficient in Ny-Ålesund is below 10 Mm À1 , while the absorbing coefficient is below 1 Mm À1 [Lisok et al, 2016]. SSA values were relatively constant and varied between 0.90 and 0.94, indicating moderate absorbing particles.…”

“…An Aerodynamic Particle Sizer (APS), model TSI 3321, was used for measuring the aerodynamic aerosol particle diameters between 0.5 and 20 µm in parallel with the SMPS. Both instruments were connected to a common stack inlet, where the WT-CRAFT filter sampler was deployed, and recorded data averaged over 10 min (Giardi et al, 2016;Lupi et al, 2016). The aerodynamic diameters measured by the APS were corrected to the volume-equivalent diameters using an average particle mass density of 1.95 g cm −3 , assuming a mixture of different substances based on the findings of Lisok et al (2016) and a dynamic shape factor of 1.…”
