et al.

Abstract: A survey of the aquatic plant flora in Lake Towada, a caldera lake located in the northern Tohoku region, was conducted in 2021. Twenty taxa of aquatic plants were confirmed; among them, a previously reported species was revised and re-identified and five species were newly recorded. Based on these updated flora data, the conservation importance of 65 lakes was evaluated following a method by Yamanouchi et al. (2016), using the number and rarity of extant species as indicators. The results showed that out of t… Show more

“…Species misidentification has had adverse effects on analyses utilizing species occurrence data (Aubry et al, 2017;Banner et al, 2018;Costa et al, 2015). Issues related to misidentification have been noted in aquatic plant inventorying and in conservation assessments (Yamanouchi et al, 2016(Yamanouchi et al, , 2023Yamanouchi & Ikeda, 2019). Nishihiro et al (2014)'s database necessitated users to independently assess the reliability of the T A B L E 3 Definition of ecological categories (Shutoh et al, 2019b) data.…”

“…It played a pivotal role in selecting lakes for the monitoring survey of aquatic plants in "Monitoring Sites 1000" project, a national biodiversity survey initiative in Japan (Ministry of the Environment, 2020). It has also been instrumental in assessing the responses of aquatic plant communities to changing lake environments (Kim & Nishihiro, 2020) and in evaluating the species richness and conservation significance of individual lakes (Shutoh et al, 2019a;Yamanouchi et al, 2016Yamanouchi et al, , 2023. However, the database of Nishihiro et al (2014) exclusively includes records of submerged, floatingleaved, and free-floating vascular species that grow solely in the water body of lake ecosystems.…”
