“…Deviations from normal development have been reported in children with congenital malformations of the articulatory organs, e.g. in the cat cry syndrome (Vuorenkoski et al, 1966), Down's syndrome (Weinberg and Zlatin, 1970), dysfunction of the central nervous system (Wasz-Hockert et al, 1968), hypothyroidism (Vuorenkoski et al, 1973), prenatal growth retardation (Vuorenkoski et al, 1972), and in the absence of auditory feedback due to deafness (Elliott and Niemoeller, 1970;Mairtony 1971).…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, more detailed objectively measured studies of the cry in hypothyroidism have not been published. Vuorenkoski et al (1973) reported one case of congenital hypothyroidism studied with a monitoring apparatus and found signals with an unusually long duration and with a fundamental frequency below 1,000 Hz. They did not, however, make more detailed measurements of the fundamental frequency.…”

“…i There was no difference in the dynamic gamma within each wail in the two samples (SPSS, one-way ANOVA, Figure 3. Percentage of vibrato contour in untreated hypothyroid infants before therapy was higher than in normal controls (Xz = 12.66, DF = 1, P< .001 After onset of substitutive therapy in pathologic subjects this pattern did not change (Xz = 0.608, DF = 1, P not significant).…”
