2446. Longitudinal Results and Cost Savings Using a Bundle of C. difficile Infection Prevention Strategies in a Long-Term Care Facility

Abstract: BackgroundLong-term care patients are at high risk of C. difficile infections (CDI) due to advanced age, high comorbid illness burden, and frequent antibiotic use. Primary infection prevention of CDI is challenging and not frequently studied. Following a period of high CDI incidence, the Long-Term Care facility at Sharp Coronado Hospital implemented a bundle of strategies.MethodsPatient census, the incidence of CDI (primary and recurrent cases), transfers to acute care and length-of-stay were collected from Ju… Show more

“…An updated report found the reduction of CDI rates was sustained using the three-strain Lactobacilli mixture ("Bio-K+") over a 6-year period (0.24/10,000 patient-days). 32 Box et al conducted a retrospective cohort study of adults >18 years old at LaJolla California at Scripps Memorial Hospital who were admitted over a 6-month period. 23 Two groups were compared: patients only on IV antibiotics (controls) and patients on IV antibiotics who were also given the 3-strain Lactobacilli probiotic (Bio-K+).…”
