25‐1: Invited Paper: OLED Microdisplays for AR/VR Applications: Technical Approaches Toward Realization of over 10,000 Nits Full‐Color Panels

Abstract: We report technical approaches for enhancing brightness of OLED microdisplays based on Si backplanes (OLEDoS) by changing in white OLED device architectures and incorporating the microcavity technology. In addition, effective strategies for further increasing the performances of the OLEDoS panels are suggested.

“…Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have been gaining interest in the display industry for use in augmented reality/virtual reality/mixed reality (AR/VR/ MR) head-mounted displays due to their excellent image quality, high power efficiency, light weight, and compactness. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8] LG Display (LGD) has been developing OLED microdisplay technologies in recent years and has launched several types of OLED microdisplay panels for near-eye head-mounted display applications.…”

“…In response to the demand for higher PPI displays, Innolux has proposed the world's first VR LCD technology exceeding 2000 PPI. However, while many micro organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays with higher PPI numbers (3000-5000 PPI) based on semiconductor chips have appeared on the market [7], their panel sizes are relatively small. If they are enlarged using an optomechanical system, the number of pixels that can be seen by the human eye per degree will not be relatively large, which we refer to as pixels per degree (PPD).…”
