The Main Recent Fault (MRF) is an active right-lateral strike-slip fault system along the Zagros collision in SW Iran. The geometric and kinematic characteristics of this fault are known along most of its segments. However, a part of this fault exposed between the Morvarid and Marivan segments is ambiguous. This paper introduces the Sarvabad fault segment with a length of about 50 km along the NW parts of the MRF. For this purpose, digital elevation model (DEM), detailed structural field data, and the geological mapping were used. These were complemented by morphometric analyses and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). The results revealed that the attitude of the Sarvabad Fault is N52°W/80°NE (22°S slip rake angle) in the central and SE parts. In the NW parts of the study area, the strike of this fault changes to N70°W and dips 80°E (25°S slip rake angle). Measuring the morphometric indices and the analysis of their results with the AHP model indicated that the NW parts of the study area have a higher relative tectonic activity than the SE parts. In addition, the parts of the study area along the Sarvabad Fault show a high relative tectonic activity. The most notable reasons for active tectonics along the Sarvabad Fault are V-shaped valleys, fault-line valleys, and asymmetric basins.

We explored the influence of a variety of geometric and mechanical factors in the evolution of décollement folds above a weak décollement level in a sedimentary sequence. Under an applied overburden pressure, we construct nine discrete element models (DE-models) to test the effects of mechanical stratigraphy, the thickness of the décollement layer, and the number of strong and weak layers within the sedimentary cover sequence. The effects of the aforementioned parameters on the structural style of fold belts and the mechanical evolution of décollement folds that develop during a progressive deformation are what we are searching for. The one-way lateral motion of a rigid, vertical boundary wall was used to shorten the particle assemblage. The models presented in this study were then compared to a natural structure in Iran and demonstrated that the combined effects of mechanical behaviour, the thickness of décollement layer, and the number of strong and weak layers within the sedimentary cover sequence are playing the decisive role in the structural style, kinematic and mechanical evolution of décollement folds.

Relative tectonic activity assessment of the Northern Sumatran Fault using geomorphic indices

Geomorphic indices have widely been applied to assess relative tectonic activity. The relative tectonic activity is mainly associated with relative uplift and long-term tectonic deformation. By considering this, the strike-slip basins along the Northern Sumatran Fault become suitable locations for the assessment. This study aims to evaluate the relative tectonic activity of the Northern Sumatran Fault with the focus on its strike-slip basins using geomorphic indices. This study utilized the Indonesian national digital elevation model (DEMNAS) with spatial resolution at 8.25-m. Here are the six geomorphic indices applied in this study along with the average values of the results: mountain front sinuosity (1.14–1.94), valley width-to-height ratio (0.58–1.93), stream length-gradient index (93.81–599.70), index of basin shape (1.66–3.16), asymmetric factor (7.45–19.93), and hypsometric integral (0.41–0.59). These results were used to generate the index of relative tectonic activity. The Northern Sumatran Fault exhibits, generally, alternating moderate and high tectonic activities and there is a northward decrease from very high to moderate tectonic activity in its northern part. The variation of relative tectonic activity of the fault coincides with the distribution of seismicity. This may suggest that the long-term tectonic deformation of the Northern Sumatran Fault has persisted to recent time.
